Chapter Six

Laith had already left for work, leaving Jesna to revel in the luxurious comfort of her bed, surrounded by a carefully curated selection of books to while away the hours. The ambiance was one of tranquility and indulgence, as she basked in the freedom to enjoy her own company without any obligations.

The household servants, far from harboring any resentful glances or unkind remarks, treated Jesna with utmost respect and deference. With a genuine willingness to accommodate her every desire, they attended to her needs promptly and cheerfully. Their willingness to cater to her whims felt almost surreal, creating an atmosphere akin to a cherished daydream turned reality. In the midst of such attentive service, Jesna couldn't help but be transported into a realm of fantasy, where she could easily imagine herself as a regal princess accustomed to such opulence and pampering.

As Jesna reclined in her plush oasis of leisure, her mind wandered toward the prospect of exploring the grandeur of the palace that now surrounded her. A subtle tinge of uncertainty crept in, however, as she grappled with the elusive nature of her role within these walls. Was she truly a guest, a captive, or perhaps even a confidante? The dichotomy of her circumstances cast a shadow of ambiguity over her thoughts, like a puzzle with pieces that refused to align.

Intriguing as the idea of wandering the palace was, Jesna’s skepticism resurfaced. She pondered the implications of her status, each possibility carrying its own weight of consequence. Could it be that she was unknowingly ensnared in a gilded cage, her freedom an illusion that masked a more sinister truth? A haunting notion flitted through her mind—if her presence bore any ulterior motive, a less-than-honorable one, she might have found herself imprisoned deep within the dungeon's gloomy depths.

However, the emergence of Laith in her life had defied the preconceptions she had had. His genuine kindness and unexpected warmth had slowly chipped away at the walls she had erected, revealing a person starkly different from the character she had painted from whispered tales. As Jesna’s contemplations unfolded, a new seed of doubt sprouted in her consciousness. Could it be that the narratives she had internalized, the stories that had haunted her existence, were woven with threads of fabrication? Had they served as cautionary yarns to deter human curiosity, embellished with falsehoods to distance them from this enchanting realm?

In the midst of her pondering, Jesna’s room seemed like a cocoon of contemplation. She grappled with the weight of what had happened, the uncertainty of the present, and the tantalizing allure of the palace’s secrets that beckoned her.

The answers remained elusive, hidden behind layers of secrecy and perception. It was a labyrinth of intrigue, and Jesna was just beginning to navigate its intricate corridors, her thoughts a blend of curiosity, skepticism, and a growing fascination with the enigma that had become her reality.

He had told her, though, faeries used to do this very thing. Snatch up humans, woo them quickly, and then keep them as lovers.
